The Morning Vittorio Discovered the Truth

Vittorio Romano had expected a quiet morning at home.

Instead, the first thing he noticed in the breakfast room was his five-year-old daughter sitting on the floor.

Lucy’s little cardigan was twisted around her waist, and one shoe had slipped loose. In front of her sat the dog’s metal bowl, filled with cold breakfast leftovers.

Bianca stood nearby, looking down at the child.

“If she refuses to behave properly,” she said coldly, “then she can eat down there.”

Marcus Hale, leaning beside the old map cabinet, let out a quiet laugh.

Neither of them had noticed Vittorio entering from the adjoining room.

He stood still for a moment.

Then he saw Lucy’s face.

“Daddy…”

He hurried across the room and lifted her into his arms.

She clung to him, her small hands gripping his shirt.

“But I’m a person,” she cried. “I’m not an animal.”

Something hardened in Vittorio’s expression.

He didn’t shout.

He didn’t need to.

At the doorway, Emma Clark stood holding her phone with both hands.

“I have a recording,” she whispered.

Vittorio turned toward her.

“Show me.”

Emma unlocked the screen.

The video had begun several minutes earlier.

Bianca was seen repeatedly ordering Lucy toward the dog’s bowl. When the little girl tried to return to her chair, Bianca pulled her back by the cardigan.

Marcus watched from the side, laughing.

At one point, he checked his watch before closing the main hallway door.

But the door to Vittorio’s adjoining room had remained slightly open.

Emma had captured everything.

Vittorio looked up from the phone.

Marcus noticed him.

“Give me that!”

He rushed toward Emma.

Vittorio quickly moved Lucy behind him and held up one arm.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Marcus stopped short.

The two men faced each other.

Then Marcus shoved forward.

Vittorio pushed him back, and Marcus lost his balance against the antique map cabinet. The old wooden frame tipped, sending rolled maps and papers across the floor.

Bianca stepped toward Lucy.

Vittorio blocked her path.

“Don’t come near her.”

She froze.

The room fell silent.

Vittorio picked up the dog bowl and set it aside.

Then he looked directly at Bianca.

“This engagement is finished.”

Her face went pale.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’ve never been more serious in my life.”

Marcus slowly rose from the scattered papers.

He wiped his mouth and looked at Vittorio.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus smiled.

It wasn’t a friendly smile.

“You made a mistake,” he said.

Vittorio turned toward him.

Marcus glanced at Emma’s phone.

“You just gave me exactly what I needed.”

Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?”

Marcus said nothing.

He simply looked toward the open doorway.

And Vittorio suddenly realized that the breakfast room might not have been the only place where someone had been watching.
